We have a myriad of events to celebrate this year, the most important is BGS Durham.

The format of the symposium will be similar to those which have gone before with a few changes reflecting our audit of your questionnaires and comments from our commercial friends.

We have made a number of changes, firstly the accommodation for delegates is now moved from St Mary’s College to Collingwood College DH1 3LT. The new site is adjacent to St Mary’s on the same side of the main road out of Durham as the science site where the lecture theatre complex is situated.

Collingwood College is a more modern college than St Mary’s and offers en-suite accommodation to all delegates, great dining facilities and excellent social areas for our use.

Our second major change is our choice of lecture theatre which is in the Calman Lecture Theatre complex. This is a really modern lecture theatre complex and will allow us to utilise the top floor for our Commercial Exhibition giving delegates greater access to the exhibition during breaks in the symposium programme. We hope to have more exhibitors present as the facility is larger than that at St Mary’s, and it also provides panoramic views across the city of Durham.

We need delegates to celebrate the Institute of Biomedical Science’s Centenary Anniversary this year. The Centennial Celebration by IBMS North East will be held at Beamish Museum on 16th May 2012.
The IBMS is publishing an historical perspective of the 100 years since the origins of our professional roots in Biomedical Science. A member of our committee Tony Harding has been at the forefront of collating and writing this historical perspective of the IBMS.

2012 is also notable for at least two more compelling reasons, firstly The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee occurs later this year and secondly the Olympic Games. Both of these events must have caused the organisations running them some major headaches, but BGS Durham has its finger on the pulse of Transfusion Science and we hope to provide you with a memorable symposium once again.
